The 24-year-old is facing increased uncertainty over his future at Old Trafford following a tough start to the season. He has only played 141 minutes this term, spanning only three games.

But while he still had a role in the Dutch national team last campaign, that has also changed. Indeed, he did not get a call-up for Louis van Gaal’s latest squad.

Pundits such as Gabriel Agbonlahor have described Van de Beek’s game time at United as a “joke”.

As for where he could move to if he left the Red Devils, Everton had strong interest in the summer transfer window. Toffees chief Marcel Brands revealed recently that he had two approaches blocked.

Everton have enjoyed a strong start to the season under Rafael Benitez. Moreover, their midfield has looked strong. As such, Alan Hutton claimed that Van de Beek should try to move to Goodison Park.

“Yeah. It’s a great club under a great manager,” Hutton told Football Insider of Everton.

“It just shows you with the signings he has brought in. The likes of [Andre] Gray and [Andros] Townsend, they’ve really hit the ground running.

“They’re going places this season. They are missing a few players but if they were to bring in Donny van de Beek, we know how good he is.”

Hutton added that it is “no good to anybody” to see the midfielder struggling at Man Utd, especially not after his starring role in Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.

He added that a move to Everton’s midfield could revitalise his career in England.

Van de Beek needs Man Utd exit

“He’ll be desperate to play football, he’ll be desperate to be in the international team as well. I think Everton could be a good move,” Hutton said.

“They’ve got a strong team, a strong spine at the club.

“If he was to play in front of Allan or [Abdoulaye] Doucoure, the players in that midfield, that could be a real threat moving forward.”

Doucoure and Allan put in a solid shift at Old Trafford to help Everton claim a 1-1 draw against United before the international break.
