Spurs started brightly but they were undone by Marcel Sabitzer’s 10th-minute goal and were on the ropes for much of the rest of the first half.

Sabitzer received the ball from a pull-back from Timo Werner and his shot beat a flapping Hugo Lloris at his near post, the French goalkeeper also partly at fault when Sabitzer’s bullet header also crept in.

Tottenham’s first chance came after 41 minutes when Giovani Lo Celso forced a save out of Peter Gulacsi.

Leipzig were happy to control the game in the second half and Spurs’ first opening came and went when Ryan Sessegnon got behind Angelino and forced a corner, which was headed clear.

The hosts finished Spurs off when Angelino’s cross, half-cleared by Eric Dier, was curled into the net by Emil Forsberg.
