Jamie Redknapp thinks Manchester United are “nowhere near” the position they should be, despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer feeling like “a new Alex Ferguson” at first.

Solskjaer will take charge of his 100th game as United manager on Sunday, when they face Arsenal. He is approaching the second anniversary of his appointment, initially as interim manager.

Solskjaer made a great start to his time in charge, which earned him the permanent role. However, in the months since then, the club have endured mixed fortunes.

For example, they were knocked out in the semi-finals of all three cup competitions they played in last season. It perhaps best sums up how they have made progress, but are still lacking something to make that final leap back to the glory days Solskjaer was part of as a player.

Ahead of Solskjaer’s landmark day, Sky Sports pundit Redknapp has reflected on the job the Norwegian has done at Old Trafford.

The former Liverpool star appears to think recruitment is a part of the problem, but says there are “a lot more questions than answers” about United under Solskjaer.

“It was obviously an incredible start,” he said. “When he first arrived we felt it was almost the second coming, a new Alex Ferguson!

“Everyone was so excited by the regime, we all thought that he’d got this group of players together and made everything better after what Jose [Mourinho] had done. But that was pretty short-lived.”

‘United nowhere near where they should be’ Redknapp continued: “There’s a lot more questions than answers now. He’s done OK, I’d say, nothing more, nothing less.

“The position United are in is nowhere near where they should be. They’ve thrown a lot of money at the problem but haven’t always bought the right players.

“So, I think if you’re to analyse where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Man Utd are right now, they should never be in the bottom half of the table.”

United have gained just seven points from their opening five league games this season. Going into this weekend’s fixtures, they are down in 15th place in the Premier League.

Admittedly, they have shown the better side of themselves in the Champions League. In their most recent game, they thrashed last season’s semi-finalists RB Leipzig 5-0.

However, their domestic season has been plagued with inconsistency so far – and Solskjaer knows they will be in for a challenge this weekend.
