France forward Antoine Griezmann is available this summer as part of Barcelona’s cost-cutting drive. He currently earns £750,000 a week and selling him would help the Catalan giants to pay Lionel Messi’s reduced salary, after the club legend agreed to extend his stay at the Nou Camp.

With Barca wanting Griezmann gone, the Daily Star claims that the current Champions League winners and Premier League champions Chelsea and City were offered the player.

The two sides held talks with Barcelona and the player’s representatives but ultimately turned down the chance to sign him.

Griezmann now appears certain to move back to old club Atletico Madrid in a swap deal for Saul Niguez.

An unhappy Saul feels like he’s being kicked out of the current LaLiga champions, having also been linked with Liverpool.

Griezmann not a ‘need’ for Prem duo The reason Chelsea declined the offer to sign the 30-year-old is that they are looking for a No.9. To that end, Borussia Dortmund’s prolific marksman Erling Haaland remains their top target.

City rejected the chance to bring in Griezmann on similar grounds. They allowed Sergio Aguero to walk this summer, but still have Gabriel Jesus on their books.

Pep Guardiola’s side have also been linked with Haaland, while a bid for Tottenham’s Harry Kane has also been rejected.

They are now said to be monitoring Robert Lewandowski’s contract situation at Bayer Munich. That is despite Guardiola casting doubt over whether City will even be able to sign a new forward.

The Spaniard said current market prices are way too steep for them to get a deal for a top star done.
