After a largely disappointing contest dominated by errors from goalkeepers David de Gea and Jordan Pickford, the Blues thought they had won it in second-half stoppage time when Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s deflected shot beat De Gea at his near post.

However, the last-gasp winner was ruled out, with Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson adjudged to have interfered with De Gea’s line of sight before the goal went in.

In the heat of the moment, Ancelotti made his protestations clear to referee Chris Kavanagh and was subsequently sent off.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Ancelotti explained his rant and questioned the decision to chalk his side’s winner off.

“I have a lot of things to say,” the manager said. “I asked the referee to explain after the game and he sent me off, then I spoke after with him.

“I will keep our conversation private,  but it was a situation if Gylfi was offside but in our view he didn’t affect the vision of De Gea.

“As I say the vision was clear but it was offside – you have to decide if the vision [of de Gea] is affected or not and everyone knows the decision can be viewed differently.”

Ancelotti is facing a touchline ban and could be in the stands for Everton‘s clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next Sunday.

“I hope not, I didn’t disrespect the referee but if I am banned I will go in the stand at Stamford Bridge,” Ancelotti said.

“I have to speak but it is not a big problem if we prepare for the game well.

“We played really well, I’m happy for this, we have to continue, no complaints, and we have to look forward. The performance was really good against a really good team and we were competitive all the time.”

The result left Everton in 11th, eight points adrift of the top four.
