Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette put in a solid performance on Sunday and could be rewarded with an ‘improved contract offer’, according to a report.
Arsenal beat Watford 3-2 at Vicarage Road in a game full of top-class goals. The Gunners took the lead in just the fifth minute when Bukayo Saka played Martin Odegaard in and the Norwegian finished past Ben Foster.
But Mikel Arteta’s side were pegged back when Cucho Hernandez netted a stunning overhead kick soon afterwards.
Lacazette then got involved as Arsenal restored their lead on the half-four mark. He held off a defender before rolling into Saka’s path, allowing the winger to strike into the top corner.
Lacazette turned provider again in the second half, cushioning the ball for Gabriel Martinelli. He went on to fire into the net, giving Lacazette his second assist of the afternoon.
Watford made it 3-2 in the 87th minute through Moussa Sissoko, but Arsenal held on to go back into the top four.
It seems Gunners chiefs were paying close attention to Lacazette’s performance. According to The Boot Room, who cite reports in France, they are willing to offer the 30-year-old an ‘improved contract’.
Alexandre Lacazette in line for new deal His current deal expires in June, meaning he is free to speak with potential suitors. Former club Lyon are certainly showing an interest.
Arteta relies on the 16-cap France international for experience and could now get his wish to keep him. Arsenal will put higher wages on the table than their previous offer, as well as extended terms.
The club’s previous contract offer was only for a short-term deal, which did not meet Lacazette’s expectations. He wants to remain at the Emirates for several years, and that demand could now be met.
The attacker has only found the net three times in the Premier League this term, and five times in all competitions. However, he is important to the way Arsenal play, as shown by his impressive performance against the Hornets at the weekend.
Pundit weighs in on star’s future Former Arsenal man Alan Smith recently gave his verdict on Lacazette’s situation. “The question is what length contract do you give Lacazette and what he wants at his age,” Smith said.
“Arsenal don’t want to be stuck with someone that is overpaid and underperforming; they’ve been there before.
“It looks like he is a good character of the dressing room. But it all depends on who they have lined up to come in.
“In an ideal world you might give him a one-year contract to oversee the transformation of that attack. But yeah, there is a lot of work for Arteta in the summer.”
