Alarm bells ringing as pundit comes to grim conclusion on Kane, Tottenham

Harry Kane should take the blame if Tottenham fail to make the top six and he has not scored enough goals, according to a pundit.

Alarm bells ringing as pundit comes to grim conclusion on Kane, Tottenham

The 28-year-old has made himself – on his day – one of the best strikers in world football. However, this season, he has only netted one Premier League goal in eight games.

That strike came in the recent 3-2 win over Newcastle. One pundit subsequently claimed that, as has happened in the past, Kane has begun an exciting goalscoring run.

But he failed to find the net against West Ham on Sunday, the England captain having a header saved by Lukasz Fabianski.

While he did have a chance to score against the Hammers, Frank McAvennie has insisted that Kane is not doing enough to warrant a good performance.

The drop-off in goals comes following his failure to move to Manchester City this summer.

“Kane is still struggling,” McAvennie told Football Insider after Spurs lost 1-0 at the London Stadium.

“I get that he’s scoring goals in the other competitions but what is the point in judging him on that? Are Tottenham going to win the Carabao Cup? No. Are they going to win the Conference League? Not the way they are going right now.

“They are suffering in the Premier League because their star man isn’t performing. Yes, he scored against Newcastle. Most people could have scored against Newcastle last week.”

McAvennie then insisted that Kane could end up being the source of blame for a poor Tottenham season.

“If Tottenham don’t finish in the top six or whatever and Kane has scored 20 odd goals, it’s not his fault,” the pundit said.

Three clubs in the running to sign Paul Pogba from Man Utd

“If they do that this season and he gets 10, for example, it is his fault. He needs to turn his form around. Off the ball, he’s been offering very little other than in that Newcastle game.

“I really don’t think that his heart is in playing for Tottenham.”

Kane told of Tottenham error

Meanwhile, Graeme Souness also picked Kane out for his role in Michail Antonio’s winner for West Ham. Kane failed to clear a corner and Antonio was able to flick the ball home.

“He’s more obsessed with the striker not getting there rather than going and attacking the ball,” Souness told Sky Sports‘ coverage of the match.

“Maybe I’m digging him out unnecessarily but is that where Harry Kane is right now? Not fully concentrated and looks like he didn’t really want to be in that position.

“Just go and attack the ball son, that’s what you would do if it was at the other end, instead he’s just trying to keep the striker off the ball instead of going for it.”

Tottenham return to action on Wednesday when facing Burnley away in the Carabao Cup.
