The Belgium defender was understood to be one of Jose Mourinho’s top summer transfer targets, but the Spurs man has revealed that it soon became apparent that he would not be leaving the club in the summer.

Alderweireld featured in just 14 Premier League games in 2017-18 and it looked as though his time under Mauricio Pochettino had come to an end.

But the Daily Mirror reported that United were not prepared to go above for £40million, while Spurs were understood to want £55million for the player, whose contract will allow him to leave for £25million in six months’ time.

The 29-year-old, who stayed put, has just eight months remaining on his contract, although he could extend his deal, while Spurs have an existing option to extend his contract by 12 months, which would then trigger a £25million release clause.

On the pitch Alderweireld has fought his way back into the plans of the Spurs boss and he has made three league starts this season, including in the 3-0 win at Old Trafford.

“I quickly came to understand, together with my advisors, that I would be staying put at Tottenham,” Alderweireld said. “However, I can’t talk about all that was said in a news conference (by Pochettino).

“It is even a personal triumph for me to have got my place back in their team. I worked hard for it. It is not a disappointment for me that I did not get a transfer. I did not want to leave at all costs.

“People said that I wanted to leave the club, but that was not true. Not everything that has been said in the media has been correct. I just try to help Tottenham as I can with the abilities I have.

“The World Cup was good for me. I worked hard and showed what I can do. I’m now on cloud nine with the birth of my daughter, Ayla, and I’m always glad to play for Belgium. So I am happy on all levels.”
