Sterling, who rose through the Liverpool ranks to become a vital player for Brendan Rodgers, earned a lucrative move across the north west in 2015.

The winger has since become an unmissable part of Pep Guardiola’s back-to-back Premier League-winning machine while also a key component of Gareth Southgate’s England side.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be targeting young, exciting British talent for his side, with Borussia Dortmund winger and Sterling’s England teammate, Jadon Sancho, widely believed to be his top target.

While Sterling is not currently under consideration for United, The Independent adds that he has nevertheless become “high up” in the list of priority targets for the Red Devils.

The newspaper claims that, should Sterling begin to look elsewhere if City’s two-year European ban remains in place, United will have no hesitation to pursue a deal.

City were banned by UEFA in February after the governing body’s Club Financial Control Body found the club had committed “serious breaches” of club licensing and financial fair play rules.

City made their strong disagreement of the claims known immediately after and their appeal against the ban will be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) next week.

Kevin de Bruyne has already admitted that he could look to move on from Guardiola’s team if the ban is upheld by CAS.

The Belgium international said last month: “I’m just waiting. The club told us they are going to appeal and they are almost 100% sure they are right. That’s why I’m waiting to see what will happen. I trust my team.

“Once the decision is made, I will review everything. Two years would be long, but in the case of one year I might see.”

In other news, United could reportedly be beaten by Newcastle in the race to sign exciting Canadian striker Jonathan David.
