Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rumminegge has said it is a “shame” that the club’s interest in Liverpool winger Sadio Mane did not lead to a deal being struck.

Mane, who started his career at FC Metz, then signed for RB Salzburg before moving to the Premier League with Southampton and then Liverpool.

The Senegal international has scored 71 goals in 143 appearances for the Reds so far, with Klopp admitting in January that he made a “big mistake” not signing the winger while he was at Borussia Dortmund.

Now, speaking to Bild, Rummenigge has echoed a similar sentiment when revealing that Bayern tried to sign Mane after he moved to Salzburg.

“We had an interest in Mane, but somehow it didn’t work out, he said. “He then went to Southampton and later Liverpool. A shame.”

Another winger Bayern have been linked with is Manchester City’s Leroy Sane, with the Bavarian club’s interest in the German international being made public during the summer.

Previous reports have suggested that Bayern are still keen on signing the 23-year-old but when pressed again on the topic, Rummenigge was quick to play down the speculation.

“If I said something about Sane there would be trouble,” the 64-year-old said. “And, above all, the price would not go down. Both are not good.”

In other news, Klopp has revealed that he is unsure when defender Joel Matip will return for Liverpool.

The centre-back has been suffering from a knee injury of late with Dejan Lovren filling in alongside Virgil van Dijk in recent matches.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, however, Klopp could not give an accurate time frame on when he expects Matip to return.

“There’s no update on Joel Matip’s scan for now,” the manager said. “We missed Joel long enough.”
