The Argentine has been at United since 2015, when he arrived from Sampdoria. He has been a reliable back-up goalkeeper to David De Gea, rarely letting United down when called upon.

Romero enjoyed a run of games in the Europa League last season. He had played all but two games in the competition up to the semi final, including their quarter-final win over Copenhagen.

The Argentine therefore expected to keep his place for their showdown with Sevilla. However, Ole Gunner Solksjaer instead opted for De Gea; the Spaniard having played just once in the competition prior to that.

Romero was said to be ‘heartbroken’ at missing out. According to The Sun, this is the moment Romero started to seek a move away.

United went on to lose 2-1 to Sevilla, who then beat Inter Milan in the final.

At 33, Romero wants to get back to playing more regular football. Aston Villa were linked with him at the start of the transfer window. Villa have now signed fellow Argentine stopper Emi Martinez, so a deal for Romero is unlikely.

Newly-promoted Leeds were another side linked with Romero. Marcelo Bielsa’s side would, however, only move for the keeper were Kiko Casilla to be offloaded. Romero’s reported £70k a week wages could also prevent that move from developing.

Now Everton are the latest side to show an interest. Carlo Ancelotti wants someone to compete with Jordan Pickford for the No 1 jersey at Everton.

Romero’s cause has not been helped by the return to Old Trafford of Dean Henderson. After two impressive seasons on loan with Sheffield United, he now appears the main competition for De Gea.

Solksjaer’s promise to Leeds target Manchester United do not expect Daniel James to leave in any kind of deal before the transfer window closes, according to a report.

Previous reports have claimed Leeds are keeping tabs on the Wales winger’s situation ahead of a potential second raid.

The Whites almost had James signed in January 2019, before his move spectacularly collapsed.

According to the Daily Star Sunday, Leeds could make another move for the 22-year-old if United sign Jadon Sancho. The Red Devils are keen to bring in another top winger, which could affect James’ game time.

However, the Manchester Evening News claims otherwise; United boss Solskjaer has reportedly promised James he will remain a key part of his plans this season.
