Canada international David was promoted to the Belgian side’s first team two summers ago and this season, he has scored 23 goals and assisted 10 others in 40 appearances.

Such form has seen Manchester United and Arsenal linked with a move for the striker, who also has 11 goals in 12 games for his country.

According to Todofichajes, however, Newcastle are now in the running and negotiations with Gent are “on the right track”.

The source says that a deal could be struck for around €35million, with the Magpies in the process of acquiring new ownership from a wealthy, Saudi-backed consortium.

David is aware of the speculation surrounding his future but previously said he was keen on a move to the German top flight if he was to take the “next step” in his career.

“I never knew big clubs would be interested in me so early,”he said. “It’s overwhelming, but I think I can make the next step.

“It’s time for me to move and go somewhere where I can keep developing and get to the potential that I have.

“The league that would suit me the most right now is the Bundesliga. It’s similar to the Belgian league in terms of the tempo and the physicality, but obviously the quality is higher in Germany and there is more competition.”

Newcastle‘s takeover was expected to be finalised last week, with the final hurdle in its progress the Premier League’s owners and directors’ test.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said last Friday, however, that the league is working to no time frame to get the takeover done.

Masters added that it was important that each decision on Newcastle’s financial future was taken carefully and at the right time.

Should Newcastle’s takeover be ratified, it is unclear whether Steve Bruce will remain the club’s head coach, amid speculation that former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino could be brought in.

The Magpies were 13th in the Premier League table before the season’s extended break.
