Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s young Manchester United side rued their missed chances as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Astana in the Europa League on Thursday.
Having already qualified for the last 32 of the competition, Solskjaer handed senior debuts to several academy products in Kazakhstan but it was elder statesman Jesse Lingard on his first appearance as captain who gave the visitors the lead after 10 minutes.
In the second half, Tahith Chong should have made it 2-0 but after receiving the ball from Luke Shaw on the right-hand side of the box, the 19-year-old blazed over from six yards with the goal gaping.
United were made to pay for their mistakes a minute later when Dmitri Shomko equalised, before the turnaround was completed via a Di’Shon Bernard own goal on his debut for the Red Devils.
Solskjaer’s side did have chances to salvage a point – including Angel Gomes’ free-kick that was tipped wide on 76 minutes – but the away side failed to do so.
