Kalvin Phillips appears to be inching closer towards an exit from Leeds United amid claims made a leading football agency has ‘promised’ to secure him a summer transfer to Liverpool.
The Whites talisman has missed a big chunk of the season, having needed hamstring surgery after sustaining the injury on December 5. His absence has been badly felt by the Whites, who have plunged into relegation danger since. However, he is nearing a much-needed return as he bids to keep his hometown club in the Premier League.
Relegation from the top flight would come as a crushing blow for Leeds. Their recent managerial change, which saw Jesse Marsch replace Marcelo Bielsa, was a last throw of the dice to reverse their poor form.
As such, this week’s games at home to Aston Villa and Norwich are vitally important to the Whites.
Should they go down, there will be no shortage of takers for their star man. Of that list, both Raphinha and Phillips will be in high demand.
Indeed, Phillips’ future has long been on Leeds agenda. Talks over an extension to his deal are yet to yield a positive outcome.
As such, not long after West Ham failed with a January move, Phillips’ agent, Kevin Sharp, reported that the player wants to stay and sign a new deal at Leeds.
Sharp said The Sun: “Kalvin was pleased that Leeds turned those offers down.
“He has never asked to leave Leeds in all his time with the club. And he has no intention of doing that now or in the summer.
Plenty in the queue for England star “But I understand the offer that was turned down would have been a record for both buying and selling clubs.
“So I would hope that Leeds would honour their promise of a new contract for him which would then end any unsettling speculation about his future this summer.”
However, it is not just West Ham who are keen on Phillips. Indeed, he’s reportedly catching the eye of Manchester United, Arsenal and Manchester City. Furthermore, a journalist earlier this month touted a surprise destination for the England midfielder.
Wherever his future lies, talk is gathering pace that Phillips and Leeds are set for a parting of ways this summer.
Earlier this week, pundit Danny Mills claimed Phillips is in the process of changing agents. The Leeds-born star has been represented by Sharp throughout his career. However, Mills theorises that a changing of representatives can only mean Phillips is thinking about a move.
Kalvin Phillips told he can land Liverpool transfer Furthermore, Football Insider on Wednesday claims a leading agency has told Phillips ‘we will get you to Liverpool’. Citing a recruitment source, the outlet claims multiple agencies claim to have connections that can earn him a transfer to a Champions League giant.
And one of those pitching for his services are said to have opened with the line ‘we’ll get you to Liverpool, wherever you like’.
The major agencies have been pitching for Phillips’ services for some time amid claims about his Leeds future.
Since Sharp’s comments a month ago, little has been said in public about Phillips’ future.
For Leeds, their immediate priority will be to secure their Premier League safety first. After that, decisions will need to be made about Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha.
Earlier this season, Andrea Radrizzani admitted Leeds may be forced to sell one of their top stars.
