Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has warned that Liverpool youngster Rhian Brewster would not be guaranteed game time if he secured a loan move to Selhurst Park in January.
Brewster, whose only appearances for the Reds so far this term have come in the EFL Cup, has been linked with a temporary move to the Eagles with reports suggesting that boss Jurgen Klopp changed his mind about keeping him at Anfield.
Speaking about the potential of such a deal at a press conference on Thursday, Hodgson insisted that while Palace may not be the best club for Brewster to head to in January, a similar move would definitely benefit his development.
“He’s a good player, there’s no doubt about that,” the manager said. “The only thing that would concern me there is that I don’t know quite how many guaranteed games [he would get].
“If I was going to speak to Jurgen and he was going to talk to me about, ‘I want Rhian Brewster to go out on loan and play some matches.’ I’m not 100 per cent certain I could guarantee him that he would be the first name on the team sheet.
“So I’m not 100 per certain that that will do anything other than be useful for us in terms of having another player who could come in from time to time and certainly help us out.
“But if I was Jurgen Klopp and Rhian Brewster, I think I’d want to be going somewhere where I was the first name on the team sheet, and I could guarantee that between January and May I’d be playing 20 matches.”
In other Liverpool news, midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has suggested that he could be the man to step in in the absence of Fabinho, who went off injured in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Napoli.
Fabinho’s ankle became trapped underneath the body of a Napoli player and despite carrying on for a brief period, the Brazilian had to be replaced by Wijnaldum.
Klopp has admitted that he is unsure as to the extent of the injury but Fabinho is likely to miss Saturday’s clash with Brighton as the club waits for scan results.
Liverpool head into the clash against the Seagulls with an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.
